This short clip demonstrates how to export a suitable 3D file through 3D DWG format for use in applications such as 3DS Max.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuSoW1v1gr4
1. After opening your file, ensure you are in 3D View and preferably not a camera view.
2.Select the Revit Icon(file) then Export
3.Select FB
4.Select your file location and name
5. You’re done!

If you are using mental Ray, this format can be quite convenient as it retains camera, light and material information from Revit. Some people prefer prefer the clean DWG format. You will notice FBX does not retain layer information however there is a script on scriptspot which can be used to reorganise the content and gain back the Revit Layers in 3DS max.
